Sorry I've been rather absent. Here's a few things I did in my last job.

This is what occupied most of my time last year. A really cool game that will never be made! Ah well, that's how it goes in this biz. I still get to draw fun stuff. Those that know me know this is quite a departure from what I'm used to doing but what a great way to stretch those muscles. I don't think I was terribly successful in getting the style like Rafael Colanzo and Bobby Pontillas. Those guys breath this stuff and it's brilliant. It just doesn't come that naturally to me but I had fun trying. These were some of the better ones...

Snabbit! Snapping Rabbit. Wouldn't it be nice if everyone had an evilometer?
I kinda like this one but if I had it to do over again I would redraw those monkeys. I can't stand the way I drew them. They look like the fell out of some stoner comic from the late 60s. Bah!Thumbnail process for the Bulkhead contraption...

What could be a more refreshing pick-me-up after fighting hordes of mechanical monsters?! Why a fruity beverage of course!

Bulkhead schematic... This guy was fun for me. It took a lot of back and forth to finally come to this design but it works well I think. The whole thing is controlled by a single ships wheel with a small horde of monkeys pulling levers and ropes to work the arms and legs!

The illustration is from a design brief for a book called Green by Jay Lake that is due to be published soon by Tor books. Dan Dos Santos has the honor of illustrating the real cover and it's a beauty. I'm fortunate enough to have had some great input from Dan, Scott Fischer, Greg Manchess, Donato, Boris and Julie, and the rest of the IMC alumni of 2008. Thanks all! I could not have progressed as far as I did without your help and encouragement!

Composition and Color Study

Got a chance to play with some shapes yesterday and built this weird little flower. Amanda and I have a small amount of flowers around our townhome, some planted by the association and some that are ours in pots. We've been spending a lot of time tending them recently, removing dead blooms, weeding and pruning the herbs. The biggest surprise this year has been how well our herbs have done. I really should have had more uses for thai basil in mind before I planted it, the thing is monstrous.

Earlier in the week I went to the Farmer's Market by the University and picked up a bouquet of wildflowers for Amanda and delivered them to her during my lunch hour. (Because I'm smooth like that.) I've had flowers on my brain this week, so it's really no surprise I drew this.

Trying to get back into the swing of things. My goal in the next few months is to establish a coherent, beneficial relationship between my digital and organic, hand-drawn work. Recently, I have begun to feel that one style will suffer over another, and as a result I end up unable to concentrate and produce meaningful output. By regaining a sense of play and experimentation I hope to make strides into increasing my ideas for editoral illustrations and comics.

Plus draw more wicked cool robots.

This sketch has been stagnating for a while. Initially, it was part of a larger piece, with plenty of complex background elements and weird color choices. I would peek in on it every few months to see what I could do to make it workable. Eventually I realized that all of the background (and some of the character) was crap. So I just decided to toss the background and re-work the character into something I liked. I tossed his formerly stumpy legs and gave him a lankier frame with a little bend to it. It worked, I dig him now.

This is Mike's fourth win and am I thrilled to have played a small part in his victory. Creating the cover and interior illustration was a return to my hand-drawn style after a long hiatus in the digital realm. I do foresee more hand-drawn, organic work on the horizon. (Maybe even some comics...)

I've been working on tank girl for way to long i don't know what i want to do with her. I need to go look at James Jean's work again, I am interested in how he does his photoshop work. Or maybe i won't ill keep up my good fight in using my own style of painting. I'm trying to come up with some new ideas for some traditional work. I want to try some new things and experiment while i can. I'm not known for what i can do with a brush and a pin and i want to show what i have. Its not all digital.
